Finally, after weeks of preparation both on the side of students and EGI staff, the big day arrived. On 22 March 2014 participating students trooped to BGS Molyko, where the prize giving day was to take place.
The inter-school competition involved members of health clubs and environmental clubs in Buea. Students of environmental clubs wrote essays on the theme “water and energy are interdependent” while the health clubs were required to make posters depicting the following themes:
- Different uses of water and its importance in our daily lives
- Consequences of the consumption of polluted water on health
- When and how to wash hands
The competition was tight, and students brought out their best talent to wow judges with well thought out and structured essays as well as colourful and informative posters. In the essay competition, GBHS Munya took first position, followed closely by GHS Buea Town and St. Therese Bilingual College. In the poster competion, BHS Buea led, GHS Buea Town was second and BGS Molyko was third. The best three students in each category were awarded gifts, while the best three clubs in each category were also awarded gifts and certificates. Here are some photographs of the event:
World Water Day raises awareness about these issues and calls on businesses and governments to help solve water and energy problems around the world. You can check out the top three essays and posters on the EGI Blog Environmental Conversations.
